cotton mill organized shortly after end of civil war orginally first near ingle booming business demanded new plant 3 story brick building 1875 corner of st joe and ohio now part of mead johnson plant ceased operations 1910 across from present mesker steel at pine (clark) and first mead johnson purchased facility 1915 to be near corn supply (vs importing) 1915 mead johnson co (NJ) acquired old cotton mill on st joe remodeled building and installed new equipment operations started march 1 1916 manufacturing baby food products Building is subsumed by additions, though tower is still visible 1949 moderne building erected sw corner penn and st joe
