2009 Top 10 Most Endangered List

Washington Ave Historic District
Historic Landmarks Foundation Top 10
Deterioration from neglect, vandalism, and inappropriate renovations. Entire district needs revitalization.
Cook, Henry Residence
Home of one of the owners of Cook's beer is architecturally significant. Threatened by encroaching commercial development and deterioration. Sympathetic owner needed.
Greyhound Bus Terminal
A nationally renown Art Modern style building. The color, architecture, and running dogs epitomize the Depression era. The station is no longer used. We are concerned about this time of transition, especially as this site is one of the possible locations for the arena.
Geiger Moving & Storage
National Register Building possibly considered for demolition for arena. Historic importance of this building needs to be considered in deciding where to locate the arena.
Armory
1938 Art Modern style W.P.A. building in danger from neglect. We continue to hope there will be a use for it.
General Cigar Company
Historic factory placed on the National Register in 2000. Stadium plans could threaten the building whose importance should not be overlooked.
Audubon Apartments
A stylish 1914 apartment building. It, along with the converted Victorian home adjacent, are the only "abandoned" buildings left in the Preservation area.
Fire Alarm Station
A neglected building in a building in a neighborhood attention. A compatible use is needed for this key piece of our Fire Department heritage.
Alhambra Theatorium
One of Evansville's oldest theaters. Restoration has stalled and needs community support.
Owen Block
This striking 1882 Second Empire style apartment building is threatened by serious deterioration due to the lack of maintenance. This property is in foreclosure. This charming cornerstone of the Riverside Historic District is in desparate need of a sympathetic owner.
