started 1876 originally steamboat repair. incorporated 1888 as f grote manufacturing co previous locations 205 lower 1st st & 322 main [1880] and 114-6 Fulton
branched out as a foundry and later got into elevator business
foundry closed 1955
sold to cedar elevators & equipment 1962
c1970 the top stories of the offices were removed and the front redone the woodworking shop at left (n) was razed
now stagg safety equipment
