1932 | New bridge dedicated, replaces old bridge |
In 1925, at the urging of the West Side Nut Club, the city condemned the old iron bridge that was constructed in 1894, not only because it was regarded as unsightly, but because its foundations were declared too weak to support the increasing automotive traffic crossing the "gateway" to Evansville´s west side, where many furniture factories and other important industries were located. After several delays, a new concrete bridge, reinforced with steel and built for $128,900, was dedicated in 1932 amid a three-day celebration.
