Pigeon Creek Greenway - Image selection
HistoricEvansville.com was contacted a while back about using one of our photos for artwork along the Pigeon Creek Greenway.
As part of the Shirley James Gateway Plaza, the city erected panels depicting transportation through the
years including an homage to the new interchange at the Lloyd and Fulton that sealed the fate of the
Orr Iron building. The plaza, named after Shirley James who helped realize
the greenway, is just south of the Lloyd Expressway underpass and was dedicated in December.

Here is the panel with Orr Iron which reads
Orr Iron
A Historic Treasure Remembered
Samuel Orr Sr. founded the Orr Iron Company in 1835. In 1912, the company erected their office and
distribution complex at the corner of Fulton and Pennsylvania Avenues. For nearly a century and a
half, Orr Iron provided quality steel products for industrial suppliers, hardware distributors, and
automotive companies. Robert D. Orr, former governor of Indiana, was Vice President of the company
during the 1950s. Orr Iron closed in 1975. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in
1982, the building was razed in 2008 to accommodate a modern interchange at Fulton Avenue and the
Lloyd Expressway.

And here is a detailed picture of the image used along with the
original image. The image
used was looking up the Orr Iron entrance fronting Pennsylvania St with the detail of the pediment and taken
shortly before it was torn down in 2008. The caption reads
When the Orr Iron building was razed, the salvaged limestone entry became a decorative element in the central atrium
of the University Center at the University of Southern Indiana.
