Architecture


History

The Baker Avenue school original building are ne corner baker and michigan buildings are plain and substantial and are located at the corner of Michigan Street and Baker Avenue. The design is very plain. one two-story building in 1880

A new school building was erected at the corner of Baker Ave and Virginia St in >1884 <1888. The building was referred to as Baker Ave School No 2.

A third school building, referred to as Virginia Street School, was erected along Virginia St between Baker and Main in <1895.

Sometime around 1890 "Avenue" was dropped and the name was shortened to Baker School

In 1922, a new addition housed an auditorium and a gymnasium. The building was built on Baker Ave between the two original school buildings.

In June 1973 as part of the school system's desgregation effort, Baker School was closed along with Fulton School and White School.

In 1975, Midtown Athletic Club opened in the old Baker building.

The school was razed in 1976. SWIRCA is now on the site.
