Mule car at 8th and Main

Horse cars were first put into use in Evansville in 1867. Very soon mules were subsituted as better suited to the job. The first line was from the river to the Evansville & Crawfordsville station at 8th and Main. The distance of eight blocks was nothing, but people paid a nickel and took the ride for the thrill. Soon there were tracks running out Washington Avenue, to Crescent City Springs (later Cook's Park), and via Court, Harriet, and Virginia Streets to Oak Hill.
